Why Barnby?
At Barnby Road Academy, we are proud to provide a welcoming, supportive, and enriching environment for both children and their families. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and we work closely with parents to ensure each pupil receives the very best start to their educational journey.
Below are just some of the many opportunities, experiences, and areas of support that make Barnby Road Academy a special place to learn and grow.
Wrap Around Care
We offer wrap around care at both the start and end of the school day, providing busy parents with flexible and reliable options.
Our Breakfast Club offers a welcoming and calm start to the day. Children can enjoy a nutritious breakfast, spend time with friends, and settle in, helping them feel ready and prepared for learning.
Our ‘Lakeside’ Afterschool Club provides a fun and engaging environment after the school day ends. Designed to support busy families, it offers a variety of play activities for children to enjoy, along with a light tea in a safe and friendly setting.
Music Enrichment
Our music provision is a vibrant and highly valued part of life at Barnby Road Academy, offering every child the chance to discover and develop their musical talents.
All pupils take part in weekly singing sessions, building confidence and a love of performance from an early age. There are further opportunities to shine through our Junior, Senior, and Chamber choirs, as well as our whole-school singing assemblies each week.
Music learning is carefully structured across the school. In Key Stage 1, children explore rhythm and sound through percussion instruments. This develops in Key Stage 2, where pupils learn the recorder in Years 3 and 4, before progressing to weekly ukulele sessions in Years 5 and 6. Alongside this, pupils can choose to sign up for a wide range of instrumental lessons to further extend their skills.
Our thriving school orchestra, with over 30 members, is a real highlight, performing regularly and showcasing the dedication and talent of our pupils.
We also provide a rich programme of enrichment opportunities, enabling children to perform, collaborate, and excel. Many of our pupils—past and present—have gone on to achieve success in local Young Musician competitions, reflecting the strength and quality of our music provision.
Trips & Residentials
We believe learning should be exciting and memorable, which is why we offer a rich programme of trips and residential experiences. These range from local visits that connect children with the world around them, through to three-night residentials as pupils progress through school. With our own minibuses, we are able to keep costs as low as possible, ensuring these valuable experiences are accessible to all.
OPAL (Outdoor Play & Learning)
Outdoor Play and Learning, which is a transformative approach that turns school playtimes into rich opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and wellbeing. By providing children with open-ended materials, freedom to explore, and a stimulating outdoor environment, OPAL encourages problem-solving, resilience, and imagination in a way that structured lessons cannot. Our commitment to OPAL means every child is empowered to take ownership of their play, develop social skills, and build confidence, all while being active and engaged outdoors—making playtime a vital and valued part of the school day.
Lunchtime & Afterschool Clubs
Our varied range of lunchtime and after-school clubs ensures there is something for everyone, whether children are interested in sport, creativity or strategy. From football and netball to chess, darts, Lego and crafts, there are opportunities for all ages and interests. We also provide a KS2 homework club, helping to support families and reinforce learning in a calm and structured setting.
Sports
We are proud to regularly take part in a wide range of sports tournaments, giving children the opportunity to represent the school and experience healthy competition. These events help to develop teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship, while fostering a strong sense of pride and belonging.
With such a wide variety of clubs on offer, Barnby Road Academy is able to field outstanding teams across many sports. Our teams compete in local district and county-wide competitions and have not only achieved great success, but have also consistently demonstrated the core values of sportsmanship that are embedded throughout the school.
Site Facilities
Our school is proud to offer a wide range of excellent facilities that provide an inspiring environment for learning, play, and personal development. From our spacious large hall and versatile small hall to our full-size sports hall, pupils have access to outstanding indoor spaces that support sport, performances, assemblies, and enrichment activities.
Outside, our extensive front and rear playgrounds, together with our exceptional recreational play areas, offer children plenty of room to explore, play, and stay active in a safe and stimulating setting. These high-quality facilities reflect our commitment to providing every child with the best possible environment in which to learn, grow, and thrive.
In-House School Meals
Our dedicated in-house kitchen team prepares fresh, nutritious meals every day using quality ingredients sourced from local butchers and greengrocers wherever possible. Every meal is cooked on site, ensuring children enjoy wholesome, home-style food that is both delicious and balanced.
Each day, children can choose from three options; a hot meal, a freshly prepared jacket potato with a selection of fillings, or chool 'brown bag' packed lunch. Our varied menus are designed to cater to different tastes while encouraging healthy eating habits and introducing children to a wide range of flavours.
Mealtimes are an important part of the school day—a chance for children to relax, socialise and refuel for the afternoon ahead. Whenever the weather allows, children also have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors on our school field, making lunchtime an active and enjoyable part of their day.
We believe that great food supports great learning, and we take pride in providing freshly cooked, high-quality meals that children look forward to every day.
